What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Generative engine optimization is the work of helping your brand and content be found, cited and described accurately in AI-generated answers.
Many people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for recommendations before they ever open Google. So business owners ask a fair question: "How do I make sure AI mentions my brand?" The honest answer is that there is no switch to flip. There is, however, a sensible way to improve your chances.
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of helping your brand and content get found, cited and described accurately in answers produced by generative AI systems. The term became popular after researchers introduced it in a 2023 paper. In simple words, SEO helps you rank in a list of links. GEO helps you become part of the answer an AI writes.
GEO and AEO
GEO overlaps with answer engine optimization. AEO focuses on being the direct answer to a question. GEO is broader. AI tools often combine information from several sources into one response, so GEO is also about being one of those sources and about how your brand is described.
How AI tools find information
Different tools work in different ways, and they change often. Some answer mainly from what the model learned during training. Many also search the web while answering, then summarize the pages they find. No company publishes a complete formula for which sources get cited, so be careful with anyone who promises guaranteed AI placement.
What does seem to help is the same thing that helps search engines: pages that can be crawled, clearly written, accurate and backed by real expertise. Strong E-E-A-T signals and mentions of your brand on reputable sites both play a part.
An example
Imagine a SaaS startup that sells billing software for clinics. Its buyers ask an AI tool for the best clinic billing software in India. To improve its chances, the startup publishes clear product pages that state who the software is for and what it does, writes a fair comparison guide, encourages genuine reviews on software review sites and contributes useful articles to healthcare industry publications. It simply gives AI systems accurate material to work with.
A practical GEO checklist
- Check that your robots.txt does not accidentally block the search crawlers of AI tools you want to appear in.
- Describe your brand, services and locations the same way across your website and profiles.
- Publish original information: your own data, process explanations and real experience.
- Write clear sections that can be quoted on their own.
- Keep key pages current, with visible dates.
- Ask AI tools the questions your customers ask, and note how answers change over time. Answers vary between runs, so look for patterns.
- Watch referral traffic from AI tools in Google Analytics 4.
When my team at Thetechhacker reviews a brand's AI visibility, we begin by asking AI tools the same questions a real customer would ask, and then we look at which sources those answers lean on. A free SEO and AI audit is a helpful starting point for this.
What to avoid
Avoid hidden text, mass-produced pages and fake reviews meant to influence AI answers. These can break platform policies and damage trust.
Simple takeaway
GEO is not a replacement for SEO or good marketing. It is the next layer on top of them. Be clear, be accurate and be genuinely useful across the web, and you give AI systems every reason to represent you well.
