What is AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results, with links to web pages that support the answer.
When Google started showing AI-written answers above search results, many people said SEO was finished. But the truth is different. SEO is not dead. It is changing shape, and AI Overviews are one of the clearest signs of that change.
AI Overviews are short, AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results. They answer the question in a few sentences or points and include links to web pages that support the answer. The feature grew out of Google's Search Generative Experience experiment and launched widely in 2024. It is now available in many countries, including India, and in several languages.
How it works
Google uses its Gemini models together with its regular search systems to create the summary. The overview appears only for queries where Google thinks it will be helpful, so many searches still show traditional results only. Google has described a technique called query fan-out for its AI features, where the system runs several related searches to cover different parts of a question before writing the answer.
Google also has AI Mode, a separate, more conversational search experience. Both features draw on pages from Google's index, so your basic visibility in Search still matters.
What Google says about optimization
Google's guidance is simple: there is no special markup or file needed to appear in AI Overviews. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in normal Search. The usual best practices apply: helpful content, a good page experience, accessible pages and clear structure. Site owners who want to limit how their content is shown can use controls such as the nosnippet rule.
An example
Imagine a travel agency in Delhi that has a detailed guide on the best time to visit Ladakh. A user searches the question and sees an AI Overview with a short answer and a few source links. If the agency's guide is clear, accurate and well organized, it has a fair chance of being one of those sources. The user who wants a full itinerary or a package may then click through. The simple fact might be answered on Google, but the planning still happens on a good website.
How to prepare your content
- Answer common questions clearly near the top of the relevant page, then add depth below.
- Show real expertise and experience, which supports E-E-A-T.
- Keep pages fast, mobile friendly and crawlable.
- Focus on content that needs more than one line to answer: comparisons, guides, local details and personal experience.
- Track impressions as well as clicks, since visibility may grow even when clicks do not.
The honest trade-off
For simple fact questions, some users will read the overview and stop there. This adds to zero-click search. That said, appearing as a cited source still builds recognition. The better approach is to stop chasing every simple query and to build pages that deserve a visit. Learning the basics of answer engine optimization also helps.
Simple takeaway
AI Overviews do not replace good websites. They summarize them. Make your pages clear, trustworthy and genuinely useful, and you give Google good reasons to point people your way.
