What is E-E-A-T?
E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness, the qualities Google uses to describe reliable, helpful content.
E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness. It is a framework from Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines that describes what makes content reliable. Google added the extra "E" for Experience in December 2022.
A common belief is that E-E-A-T is a score Google gives your website. It is not. There is no single E-E-A-T number. It is a way of thinking about quality, and many of Google's ranking systems aim to reward content that shows these qualities.
What each part means
- Experience: has the writer actually used the product, visited the place or done the thing? A hotel review from someone who stayed there carries weight.
- Expertise: does the creator have the knowledge or skill for the topic? A tax article from a chartered accountant is more reliable than one from an anonymous blog.
- Authoritativeness: is the website or person known as a go-to source in this subject?
- Trustworthiness: is the content accurate, honest and safe? Google describes trust as the most important part of the family.
Google applies higher standards to topics that can affect people's health, money, safety or major life decisions. These are often called YMYL topics, short for "Your Money or Your Life". A hospital, a financial advisor or a law firm needs to show stronger E-E-A-T than a hobby blog about kites.
A practical example
Imagine two articles on "how to choose health insurance for parents in India".
The first is generic, with no author name, no date and the same advice found everywhere. The second is written by a named insurance professional, explains real policy features with examples, mentions when it was last reviewed, and links to official regulator information. The second article shows experience, expertise and trust. Readers feel it, and search systems are designed to reward it.
For a small business, this does not need a famous name. A local clinic can show its doctors' qualifications, real photos of the facility and clear answers written from daily practice.
E-E-A-T in the age of AI content
AI tools can now produce fluent text in seconds. This is exactly why E-E-A-T matters more, not less. Generic information is easy to produce. First-hand experience, original photos, real numbers from your business and a known expert behind the words are not. When you use AI-generated content, add your own knowledge and review it carefully before publishing.
How to show E-E-A-T on your website
- Add clear author names with short bios and relevant qualifications.
- Share first-hand insights, photos, processes and lessons from your own work.
- Keep facts accurate and update important pages regularly.
- Make contact details, policies and company information easy to find.
- Earn mentions and reviews from respected sources. Genuine backlinks help here.
- Build depth in one subject over time to grow topical authority.
Simple takeaway
E-E-A-T is Google's way of describing content that real people can rely on. You cannot fake it with a plugin. Show who you are, prove what you know and be honest with your readers. That is good for SEO, and it is simply good business.
