What is Technical SEO?

Technical SEO makes sure search engines can crawl, render and index your website, covering speed, mobile use, site structure, redirects and security.

Technical SEO is the work that makes sure search engines can find, crawl, render and index your website without trouble. It is less about what your content says and more about whether the website itself is built in a way that machines can read easily and visitors can use comfortably.

A simple analogy: if your content is the goods in a store, technical SEO is the building. Doors that open, lights that work, aisles that are not blocked. Nobody praises a door that works. Everyone notices one that is stuck.

What it includes

  • Crawlability: search engine bots can reach your pages through links and a sitemap. See crawling and indexing.
  • Indexing controls: robots.txt, noindex tags and canonical tags are set correctly, so the right pages appear in search.
  • Speed and page experience: pages load fast and stay stable. Google measures this through Core Web Vitals: LCP, INP and CLS.
  • Mobile friendliness: Google mainly uses the mobile version of your site.
  • Security: HTTPS on every page.
  • Site structure: clean URLs, logical categories and no broken links or long redirect chains.
  • Structured data: schema markup that tells search engines what your content represents, like a product, an event or a local business.

An everyday example

Imagine an e-commerce store selling handmade jewelry with 800 products. Every filter on the category page, such as color, price and material, creates a new URL. Suddenly Google sees a huge number of near-identical pages. Crawlers spend time on these filtered versions and reach new products slowly. Rankings drift down, and the owner assumes the content is the problem.

The real fix is technical: control which filter pages get indexed, point duplicates to the main version, and keep the sitemap limited to pages that matter. Content was never the issue.

This is also why technical problems often hide in plain sight. The website looks fine to the owner on a laptop, but crawlers and phone users experience something very different.

Why it matters for AI search

AI crawlers and AI-powered search features also need to access and understand your pages. If key content appears only after heavy JavaScript runs, or if important sections are blocked, AI tools may simply not see them. A technically clean website gives your content its best chance in both search results and AI answers.

What to check first

  1. Open Google Search Console and review the page indexing report.
  2. Check Core Web Vitals for mobile, not just desktop.
  3. Confirm that robots.txt is not blocking important sections.
  4. Find broken links and fix redirect chains.
  5. Make sure each important page has one clear canonical version.

When my team at Thetechhacker takes on a new website, we usually start with a technical review before writing a single new page. Fixing the foundation first makes every later effort count.

The short version

Technical SEO rarely gets attention until something breaks. Check it regularly, especially after a redesign or a platform change, and your content will have a solid base to stand on. For most small websites, a short monthly check is enough.
