What is Google Search Console (GSC)?
Google Search Console is a free Google tool that shows how your site performs in Google Search, which pages are indexed and what needs fixing.
Many business owners look only at their analytics tool to judge SEO. Analytics tells you what visitors do after they arrive. Google Search Console tells you what happened before they clicked: what they searched, how often your site appeared, and whether Google can even read your pages.
In simple words, Google Search Console, often called GSC, is a free direct line between your website and Google Search. If SEO were a car, Search Console would be the dashboard.
What you can see inside
- Performance report: clicks, impressions, average click-through rate and average position for your queries, pages, countries and devices, with up to 16 months of data.
- Page indexing report: which pages are indexed and the reasons others are not.
- URL Inspection: the status of any single page, plus an option to request indexing after an update.
- Sitemaps: where you submit your sitemap and confirm that Google can read it.
- Core Web Vitals: real-user speed and stability data, grouped into good, needs improvement and poor.
- Links, manual actions and security issues: who links to you, and alerts if Google spots a serious problem.
How to get started
Add your website as a property and verify that you own it. A domain property, verified through a DNS record with your domain provider, covers every version of your site, including HTTP, HTTPS, www and subdomains. Data starts building up over the following days, so set it up early, even before launch.
Next, submit your XML sitemap and give access to the people who need it. You can add your developer or marketing partner as a user with limited permissions, so you never need to share your Google account password. Keep yourself as the owner of the property, because it belongs to your business.
An example of using it well
For example, imagine a physiotherapy clinic in Ahmedabad. Its owner opens the Performance report and sees that a page about back pain exercises gets 8,000 impressions a month but only 80 clicks. That is a click-through rate of 1 percent. The page ranks, but the result does not invite clicks. Rewriting the title tag and meta description to match what people are searching for is a simple, low-cost test. The owner also notices queries the clinic never targeted, which become ideas for new pages.
Why it matters today
As AI features change what search results look like, Search Console remains the most direct view of how Google sees your site. When my team at Thetechhacker starts working with a new brand, access to Search Console is one of the first things we ask for, because it shows real search data rather than estimates from third-party tools. Those tools are useful for research, but Search Console is where Google reports on your own site.
Simple takeaway
Google Search Console is free, official and practical. Check the Performance report every week or two, review indexing issues every month, and act on alerts quickly. For a wider view, pair it with a free SEO and AI audit report.
