What is Meta Ads?
Meta Ads are paid ads that run on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Meta's partner apps, created, targeted and measured in Meta Ads Manager.
Many people still call them "Facebook ads". That made sense a few years ago. Today, Meta Ads covers paid ads across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and the Audience Network of partner apps, all managed from one place called Meta Ads Manager.
Here is the key difference from search ads. On Google, people tell you what they want by typing it. On Facebook and Instagram, people are scrolling, not searching. Meta Ads is about earning a pause in that scroll with something worth stopping for.
How Meta Ads is organized
Every campaign has three levels. The campaign holds your objective, such as awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, app promotion or sales. The ad set holds your budget, schedule, audience and placements. The ad itself is the creative: an image, a video, a carousel or a Reel with your text and button.
Meta's Advantage+ options now automate much of this, including audience selection and placements. That said, automation works best when the Meta Pixel and Conversions API are sending clean data about who actually buys.
Placements include Feeds, Stories, Reels, Marketplace and Messenger. You can also run click-to-WhatsApp ads, which open a WhatsApp chat with your business instead of a website. For many Indian small businesses, that conversation is where the sale really happens.
Targeting options
- Core audiences: location, age, interests and behaviors.
- Custom audiences: your website visitors, customer lists or people who engaged with your page, ideal for retargeting.
- Lookalike audiences: new people who resemble your best customers.
- Broad targeting: letting Meta's system find buyers with very few limits, which can work well once you have good conversion data.
An example that fits Indian businesses
Suppose a home bakery in Pune runs a Reels ad showing a custom birthday cake, targeted to people within 5 km. The button says "Send WhatsApp message". It spends ₹500 a day for 10 days, so ₹5,000 in total, and receives 40 WhatsApp chats. That is ₹125 per conversation.
If a quarter of those chats turn into orders, that is 10 orders at ₹500 of ad cost each. The bakery can now compare that with its profit per cake and decide whether the campaign pays for itself.
What makes Meta ads work
Creative is the biggest lever on Meta. The algorithm decides who sees your ad, but your first two seconds decide whether they care. Simple, vertical, real-looking short-form video often feels more natural in the feed than polished studio content. Refresh your creatives regularly, because the same audience gets tired of the same ad.
Also keep an eye on frequency and comments. A warm reply to every question under your ad builds trust, and trust helps the sale. Before you spend, make sure your Instagram profile and WhatsApp Business account look complete, because curious people will check them.
Simple takeaway
Meta Ads is not about finding people who are searching. It is about creating demand among people who did not know they needed you yet. Strong creative, clear tracking and patience during the learning phase are what turn scrolls into customers.
