What is Lookalike Audience?
A lookalike audience is a group of new people an ad platform finds because they share traits with your existing customers or best website visitors.
Every business owner has wished for this at some point: "If only I could find a thousand more customers just like my best ones." A lookalike audience is the ad platform's attempt to do exactly that.
You give the platform a source audience, such as your customer list or people who bought from your site. The platform studies patterns in that group and finds new people with similar traits and behavior. You never see who those people are. You only see the audience size and the results.
Where you will find it
The term is best known from Meta Ads, where you can create Lookalike Audiences for Facebook and Instagram campaigns. Meta lets you choose a size from 1% to 10% of a country's population. A 1% lookalike is the closest match. A 10% lookalike is broader, with more reach but weaker similarity. Meta needs a source audience of at least 100 people from a single country, though a larger, high-quality list gives the system more to learn from.
Other platforms have their own versions. TikTok offers lookalike audiences, and LinkedIn now uses predictive audiences. Google Ads retired its "similar audiences" feature in 2023 and relies on optimized targeting and audience signals instead.
The quality of the seed decides everything
A lookalike is only as good as the audience you feed it. Think of it like a recipe: good ingredients give a good dish. If you upload every email address you have ever collected, the platform will look for people similar to a messy mix. If you upload your top customers by customer lifetime value, it will look for people similar to your best buyers.
For example, a skincare brand could build two lookalikes: one from all website visitors, and one from customers who bought at least twice. The second source list is smaller, but it describes the kind of customer the brand actually wants more of.
How to use lookalikes well
- Start from a clean, high-value source list, and make sure you have consent for every contact you upload
- Begin with a 1% to 3% lookalike, then test broader sizes
- Exclude existing customers so you pay to reach new people
- Refresh the source list every few months as your customer base grows
- Compare results against broad targeting, which has become very capable on Meta
Lookalikes in the age of AI targeting
Ad platforms now lean heavily on automation. Meta's Advantage+ audience, for instance, can treat your lookalike as a suggestion rather than a strict boundary. That said, the principle still matters: the better your first-party data, the better the machine can find your next customers.
It also helps to know your customer in plain human terms, not just as a data file. A clear picture of who buys and why makes your creative sharper, and sharp creative helps any audience perform.
Simple takeaway
A lookalike audience is a smart shortcut to new prospects, not a magic list of guaranteed buyers. Give the platform a strong seed, test a few sizes, and let your conversion data tell you which version deserves the budget.
