What is Meta Description?

A meta description is a short HTML summary of a page that search engines may show under the title. It does not affect rankings, but it shapes clicks.

A meta description is a short summary of a web page, written in the page's HTML. Search engines may show it under the title in search results to help people decide whether to click. Visitors do not see it on the page itself, only in search listings and sometimes in link previews.

Many people believe the meta description helps a page rank higher. It does not. Google has said that meta descriptions are not a ranking factor. Their real job is persuasion. Think of it as the short line on a shop's signboard that makes a passerby step inside.

How it works

You write the meta description in the head section of the page. When the page appears in search, Google decides whether to use your text or create its own snippet from the page content. Google often rewrites descriptions, especially when another part of the page better matches the specific search. This is normal and not a penalty.

There is no fixed length rule. Google shortens long descriptions to fit the screen, so put the most important message first. Around 150 to 160 characters is a common working guide.

It still earns its place for a few reasons:

  • Clicks: a helpful description can improve your click-through rate, which brings more visitors from the same ranking.
  • Clarity: it sets expectations, so the right people visit and the wrong ones do not waste time.
  • Sharing: many social platforms and messaging apps use it in link previews if no other tags are set.
  • Brand voice: it is a small space to sound like a real business, not a list of keywords.

A practical example

Imagine a pet grooming salon in Gurugram. Compare two descriptions for its home page:

  1. "Pet grooming, dog grooming, cat grooming, best pet grooming Gurugram, pet salon."
  2. "Gentle grooming for dogs and cats in Gurugram. Baths, haircuts and nail care by trained groomers. Book a slot online or on WhatsApp."

The first reads like a keyword list. The second tells a pet owner what they get, where, and how to book. That is the one people choose.

How to write a good meta description

  1. Summarize what the page offers in plain words.
  2. Include the main keyword naturally. Google often highlights words that match the search.
  3. Add a useful detail, such as a price range, location or delivery time.
  4. End with a soft call to action, like "See the full menu" or "Get a free quote".
  5. Write a unique description for every important page instead of copying the same text across pages.

In the AI search era

AI Overviews and chat tools read your full page, not just the meta description. So a meta description alone will not decide whether AI tools cite you. That said, it still shapes how your classic listing looks on the SERP, where many people still decide what to click.

Simple takeaway

A meta description is a short sales line, not a ranking trick. Pair it with a strong title tag, keep it honest and specific, and give searchers a clear reason to choose your page.
