What is UTM Parameters?

UTM parameters are short tags added to the end of a URL that tell your analytics tool exactly which source, medium and campaign sent each visitor.

Many businesses run Instagram posts, WhatsApp broadcasts, email newsletters and printed flyers at the same time. Then they open their analytics and see a big lump of "direct" or "referral" traffic with no idea which effort worked. The problem is usually not the marketing. It is the missing labels.

UTM parameters are those labels. They are small pieces of text added to the end of a link that tell tools like Google Analytics 4 where a visitor came from. The name comes from Urchin, the analytics company Google acquired in 2005: UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module.

The five standard parameters

  • utm_source: who sent the traffic, such as instagram, newsletter or google.
  • utm_medium: the type of channel, such as social, email or cpc.
  • utm_campaign: the campaign name, such as diwali_hampers.
  • utm_term: mostly used for paid search keywords.
  • utm_content: used to tell apart two links or creatives in the same campaign.

The first three are the ones you will use almost every time. GA4 also reads a few newer ones, such as utm_id, but these five cover most needs.

A practical example

Suppose a bakery in Pune promotes a festive hamper on Instagram, in its newsletter and on a printed flyer. Each gets its own link:

  • bakery.com/hampers?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=diwali_hampers
  • bakery.com/hampers?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=diwali_hampers
  • bakery.com/hampers?utm_source=flyer&utm_medium=qr&utm_campaign=diwali_hampers

For the flyer, the tagged link goes inside a QR code, which you can create with the free QR code generator. Now GA4 can show how many visits and orders came from each channel within the same campaign.

Rules that keep your data clean

  • Use lowercase, always. GA4 treats "Instagram" and "instagram" as different sources.
  • Agree on a naming sheet so your whole team tags links the same way.
  • Prefer standard mediums like social, email and cpc, so GA4 sorts traffic into the right default channel. A custom medium like qr still appears in source and campaign reports, but may show as "Unassigned" in channel reports.
  • Never tag internal links on your own website. It can overwrite the real source of the visit and confuse your attribution.
  • Keep Google Ads auto-tagging on instead of adding manual UTMs to those ads.

Reading the results

In GA4, open the traffic acquisition report and switch the main dimension to session source / medium or session campaign. You will see sessions, engagement and key events for each tagged link. For example, the bakery might find that the newsletter brought fewer visits than Instagram but far more hamper orders. That is the kind of insight that changes where you spend your next festive budget.

UTMs are just as useful for links in your Instagram bio, WhatsApp Business catalog messages, YouTube descriptions, partner websites and influencer posts. Anywhere a link leaves your hands, a tag helps it report back.

Simple takeaway

UTM parameters cost nothing and take a minute to add, yet they turn guesswork into clear answers. Tag every link you share outside your website, keep the naming consistent, and your reports will finally tell you which email campaign, post or flyer brought the customers.
