What is Google Business Profile (GBP)?
Google Business Profile is the free Google listing that shows your business details, photos and reviews in Google Search and Google Maps results.
Many shop owners think a website is the first thing they need online. For a local business, that is not always true. Very often, the first place a customer meets you is your Google Business Profile.
Google Business Profile, earlier known as Google My Business, is the free listing that presents your business on Google Search and Google Maps. It holds your name, address, phone number, hours, photos, reviews and more. In simple words, it is your shop's signboard on Google, and it is open even when your shutter is down.
What customers see
When someone searches your business name, or something like "eye clinic near me", your profile can appear with:
- Your business name, main category and rating.
- Address or service area, plus a button for directions.
- Phone number, website link and opening hours, including special hours on holidays.
- Photos, products or services, and updates you post.
- Customer reviews and your replies to them.
For many people, this is enough to decide. They call, visit or move on to the next listing without ever opening your website.
How to set it up properly
- Create or claim your profile through Google and complete verification. Google may ask for a short video, a phone call, an email or another method, depending on the business.
- Pick the most accurate primary category. Add secondary categories only if they truly apply.
- Fill in every useful field: hours, services, attributes, a clear description and real photos of your place and work.
- Keep your name, address and phone exactly the same as on your website. This is the heart of NAP consistency.
- Ask happy customers for reviews and reply to them with care.
An example
Imagine a beauty salon in Kochi. The owner adds photos of the actual interiors, lists services such as bridal makeup and hair spa, posts an update before Onam about extended timings, and replies warmly to every review. A new customer searching "salon near me" now sees a business that looks active and cared for. That impression matters as much as the ranking.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Adding extra keywords to the business name, such as "Best Salon Kochi Cheap". Google's guidelines do not allow this, and it can lead to suspension.
- Using a virtual office or a fake address to appear in a new area.
- Forgetting to update hours, phone numbers or a new location after a change.
- Creating duplicate profiles for the same place.
- Leaving reviews unanswered for months.
Why it matters in the AI era
Your profile is one of the main sources Google uses for local results, and it supports the wider work of local SEO. Google also uses AI to summarize places in Search and Maps, and those summaries can draw on your profile details and customer reviews. An accurate, active profile gives these systems good material to work with. It also makes online reputation management much easier, because your reviews live right there.
Simple takeaway
Treat your Google Business Profile like a second shopfront. Keep it accurate, keep it fresh and keep the conversation going with customers. It costs nothing, and it is often the first impression you make.
