What is Google Ads?
Google Ads is Google's advertising platform for showing paid ads on Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail and partner sites, usually on a pay-per-click basis.
A common belief is that Google Ads is just the "Sponsored" results at the top of a search page. Those are a big part of it, but Google Ads is really a full advertising system. It lets you show ads on Google Search, YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, the Google Play Store and a large network of partner websites and apps.
The platform was called Google AdWords until 2018, when Google renamed it. The name changed, but the core idea stayed the same: you reach people at the moment they show interest.
The main campaign types
- Search: text ads shown when people search for your keywords.
- Display: image ads on websites and apps in the Google Display Network.
- Video: ads on YouTube, including Shorts.
- Shopping: product listings with an image and price, popular with online stores.
- Performance Max: one campaign that uses Google's automation to place ads across all its channels.
- Demand Gen: visual ads on YouTube, Discover and Gmail for building interest.
For most small businesses, Search is the best place to start, because it captures people who are already looking.
How Google decides who shows up
Every search triggers a quick auction. Google looks at your bid, the expected quality of your ad and landing page, and the context of the search. This is why Quality Score matters: a relevant, useful ad can win a better position without paying the most.
You also do not need to set every bid by hand anymore. Smart Bidding strategies such as Target CPA or Maximize Conversions let Google adjust bids for each auction, based on signals like device, location and time of day.
An example from a local business
Imagine a coaching institute in Kochi that offers IELTS classes. It can run a Search campaign for phrases like "IELTS coaching in Kochi", limit ads to a 15 km radius, and show a call button during office hours. Students who search, click and call are tracked as leads. Within a few weeks, the institute knows which keywords bring inquiries and which only bring browsers.
This is the real strength of Google Ads. You are not guessing what people want, because they have already typed it. Your job is to answer that search with a clear, honest ad and a page that delivers.
What to set up right
When my team at Thetechhacker takes over a Google Ads account, the first thing we check is conversion tracking. A lot of wasted budget traces back to an account that cannot tell a sale from a click. After that, we look at:
- Linking Google Ads with Google Analytics 4
- Location and language settings
- The search terms report and negative keywords
- Ad copy that matches the landing page
None of these is complicated. Together, they decide whether your money goes to buyers or to curious visitors.
Simple takeaway
Google Ads puts your business in front of people who are actively searching, which makes it one of the most direct ways to win customers online. Start small, track properly, and let the data, not guesswork, decide where your budget goes next.
