Free Background Remover documentation
The Free Background Remover turns the background of a JPG, PNG or WebP photo transparent and gives you a clean PNG cut-out in seconds. This guide explains every option, how the result is made, the limits and how to fix the messages you might see.
Open the Free Background Remover
What it does
The Free Background Remover takes a photo, finds the main subject and makes everything else transparent. You get back a PNG cut-out that you can keep transparent or place on a solid color before you download it.
It works well for product photos, profile pictures, logos, signatures, pets and illustrations. There is no sign-up, no watermark and nothing to install.
Your image is processed on this website's own server, not by a third-party service, and it is discarded as soon as the cut-out is sent back to you.
At a glance
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Accepted files | JPG, PNG and WebP |
| Largest upload | 10 MB |
| Output | PNG with a transparent background, up to 2048 pixels on the longest side |
| Background choices | Transparent, five preset colors, or any color you pick |
| Usage | Up to 30 images per hour |
| Storage | None. Images are processed in memory and never saved |
Quick start
- Open the Free Background Remover.
- Add your image. Drag it onto the upload box, click Upload image to choose a file, or copy an image and paste it anywhere on the page with
Ctrl + V(⌘ + Von a Mac). - Wait a few seconds while the box shows Removing the background. The tool is finding the subject and refining the edges.
- When your cut-out appears, drag the slider across the image to compare the before and after.
- Keep Transparent selected, or click a color swatch to put the subject on a new background.
- Click Download PNG to save the file. Click Remove another when you are ready for the next image.
Pasting is the quickest way to work with screenshots. Copy the screenshot to your clipboard and paste it straight onto the page, with no need to save a file first.
Every option explained
Ways to add an image
| Method | How it works |
|---|---|
| Drag and drop | Drop a file onto the upload box. The box highlights while you hold a file over it. |
| Upload image button | Opens your file picker. On a phone you can choose a photo from your gallery or camera. |
| Paste | Press Ctrl + V or ⌘ + V anywhere on the page while an image is on your clipboard. |
The tool handles one image at a time. If you drop several files, only the first is used.
Background options
After the background is removed, a row of swatches appears next to your cut-out. The preview updates as soon as you click one, so you can try several before you download.
| Swatch | Color value | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent | No background | Logos, signatures, designs and websites |
| White | #ffffff | Product listings and photos for forms |
| Black | #111111 | Bold social posts and checking light edges |
| Cream | #f3f0e8 | Soft, warm product and profile shots |
| Gold | #c4a066 | Premium-looking posts and banners |
| Orange | #e8731f | Eye-catching thumbnails and ads |
| Any color | Color picker, starts at #2563eb | Matching your brand color exactly |
Each new upload starts on Transparent again, so you never download a colored background by accident.
Buttons and controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Compare slider | Drag it to reveal the original photo over the cut-out. |
| Download PNG | Saves the cut-out with the background you selected. |
| Remove another | Clears the result and takes you back to the upload box. |
Reading the results
The result panel shows your cut-out on the background you picked. A checkered pattern means the area is transparent. Drag the compare slider to check that the whole subject was kept.
What the downloaded file contains
- Format: a lossless PNG with a full transparency channel. Soft edges such as hair, fur and anti-aliased lettering are partly transparent, so they blend naturally onto any new background.
- Size: if the longest side of your upload is 2048 pixels or less, the cut-out keeps the same size. Larger images are scaled down proportionally so the longest side is 2048 pixels. Small images are never enlarged.
- Orientation: phone photos are turned the right way up using the rotation the camera saved with the photo.
- Existing transparency: if you upload a PNG or WebP that is already partly transparent, those transparent areas stay transparent.
File names
The download is named after your original file. Spaces and special characters become hyphens, and the name is trimmed to 60 characters.
| Background | Example for blue sneaker.jpg |
|---|---|
| Transparent | blue-sneaker-no-background.png |
| Any color | blue-sneaker-new-background.png |
How colored backgrounds are added
When you pick a color, your browser draws the cut-out on that color at full resolution and saves it as a PNG. This happens on your device, so extra color downloads do not count towards your hourly limit.
A quick quality check: preview the cut-out on the Black swatch and then on the White swatch. Leftover background or a faint outline is much easier to spot against a strong contrast.
How it works
1. The file is checked
Your browser first checks that the file is a JPG, PNG or WebP and is no larger than 10 MB. The server then reads the actual image data, so the format is confirmed by the content of the file, not just its name. Phone photos are rotated upright, and anything larger than 2048 pixels on its longest side is scaled down with a high-quality resampling filter.
2. The AI finds the subject
The tool uses an open-source AI segmentation model (ISNet, general-use version) that is trained to separate a main subject from its surroundings. It runs on this site's own server. The model produces a soft mask, which is a score for every pixel showing how sure it is that the pixel belongs to the subject.
The usual blur-and-threshold clean-up tends to erase thin lines and small parts, so this tool uses its own pixel-level edge refinement instead.
3. The edges are refined
The tool looks at the photo and chooses one of two approaches automatically.
| Photo type | What the refinement does |
|---|---|
| Plain or gradient background (studio, product and logo shots) | The background color is modelled across the whole image, including smooth gradients. Anything clearly different from it is kept, so small or separate details the AI skipped, such as letters, icons, dots and thin lines, come back with clean edges. The background tint is then removed from the semi-transparent edge pixels, so there is no colored halo. Faint noise and soft shadows stay transparent, and tiny isolated specks under 12 pixels are not added back. Where the AI is very sure something is subject, such as a white shirt on a white wall, it is kept. |
| Busy background (rooms, streets, outdoor scenes) | An edge-aware filter snaps the uncertain edge band of the mask to the real edges in your photo. Areas the AI is already confident about are left untouched. |
4. Your PNG is sent back
The subject and its refined transparency are combined into an optimized PNG and returned to your browser. The image is never written to disk. The server handles one image at a time to keep each result fast, so if several people upload at the same moment, your image simply waits its turn.
Tips for the best results
- Start with a sharp, well-lit photo. Clear light and a subject in focus make the outline much easier to find.
- Give the subject some contrast. A dark product on a light background, or the reverse, gives the crispest edges.
- Shoot products on a plain backdrop. A wall, a sheet or a large piece of paper lets the plain-background refinement recover small parts and remove color fringing.
- Upload the largest version you have, up to 10 MB. The cut-out keeps up to 2048 pixels on its longest side, which is sharp enough for websites, online stores, social posts and slides.
- Avoid strong shadows touching the item. Soft shadows on plain backgrounds are usually removed, which suits most store listings.
- Pick the right background for the job. Keep Transparent for logos, signatures and designs. Choose White for marketplace listings and photos for forms, and always check the exact photo rules of the form you are filling in.
- Lift a signature cleanly. Sign on plain white paper with a dark pen, photograph it in even light, then download it as a transparent PNG.
- Describe your images on your website. When you add a cut-out to a web page, give it helpful alt text so search engines and screen readers understand it.
Limits, privacy and fair use
Limits
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| File types | JPG, PNG and WebP |
| Upload size | Up to 10 MB per image |
| Output size | Up to 2048 pixels on the longest side |
| Usage | Up to 30 images per hour from the same connection |
| Processing | One image at a time on the server. An upload waits up to 45 seconds for its turn |
| Very large dimensions | Images with an extremely high pixel count may be refused, even under 10 MB |
The hourly limit covers most product shoots and design projects, and it keeps the tool fast for everyone.
Privacy
- Your image is processed in memory and sent straight back to you. It is never written to disk, saved, shared or used to train anything.
- The server marks the result so it is not cached along the way.
- The before and after preview lives only in your browser tab and is cleared when you start a new image or leave the page.
- Colored backgrounds are added on your own device, not on the server.
Fair use
The tool is free, with no credits and no watermark. Your cut-outs are yours to use for your store, ads, profile pictures or client work. Please upload only images you have the right to use.

Troubleshooting
- "Please choose a JPG, PNG or WebP image." The file is in a format the tool does not accept, such as HEIC from an iPhone, GIF, SVG, BMP, TIFF or PDF. Export or save it as a JPG or PNG and upload it again. On an iPhone, sharing or exporting the photo as a JPG works well.
- "That image is over 10 MB. Try a smaller file." Resize the photo or save it as a JPG at a slightly lower quality. Since the result is capped at 2048 pixels on the longest side, a version around that size loses nothing.
- "That file isn't a JPG, PNG or WebP image we can read." The file may be damaged, only partly downloaded, or have an extremely high pixel count. Open it in any photo app, save a fresh copy, scale it down if it is very large, and try again.
- "Please upload a JPG, PNG or WebP image." The file name or type says it is an image, but the data inside is a different format, for example a GIF renamed to .png. Re-save it as a real JPG or PNG from a photo editor.
- "Please choose an image." The file arrived empty. Choose the file again, or download a fresh copy if it came from email or a chat app.
- "Too many attempts. Please wait a few minutes and try again." You have reached the limit of 30 images in an hour from your connection. Take a short break and you will be able to continue.
- "The background remover is busy right now. Please try again in a moment." Other images were ahead of yours for longer than 45 seconds. Wait a moment and upload again.
- "Something went wrong. Please try another image." This usually means the connection dropped during the upload. Check your internet connection, refresh the page and try once more.
- "The background remover isn't installed on this server yet." The tool is briefly unavailable. Please try again a little later, or get in touch if it continues.
- Pasting does nothing. Your clipboard probably holds text or a link, not image data. Copy the image itself, or use Upload image.
- Part of the subject is missing, or some background is left behind. This happens most with low-contrast or blurry photos. Try a sharper photo, more light or a plainer backdrop.
- A thin colored outline around the subject. This is most likely on busy backgrounds. Reshoot on a plain backdrop so the halo removal can do its work.
- The shadow under my product disappeared. On plain backgrounds, soft shadows are treated as background by design, which gives a clean listing photo.
- The download is smaller than my original. Images are scaled to 2048 pixels on the longest side.
- The result is sideways. The file probably has no rotation information. Rotate it in your photo app and upload it again.
