Facebook Is Not Outdated: Why Your Business Still Needs It Alongside Instagram

Facebook Is Not Outdated

Recently, I asked one of my clients a simple question: “Do you use Facebook for your business?”

Her answer came quickly: “No, Facebook is outdated. We only use Instagram.”

That response is becoming common. Many founders, creators, and small businesses think Instagram is where the audience is, while Facebook is a platform from the past. Instagram looks more modern. It is visual, fast, and built around Reels, Stories, creators, and short-form content.

But calling Facebook outdated is not the same as saying it is no longer important.

When we start running a serious paid campaign, most businesses quickly realize that Facebook still plays a major role behind the scenes. Meta’s advertising ecosystem is connected. Instagram campaigns are not just managed from Instagram. The real campaign setup, audience control, budget planning, reporting, pixels, lead tracking, and optimization happen inside Meta’s business tools, historically tied closely to Facebook Pages and Meta Ads Manager. Meta’s own documentation explains that Ads Manager is the place to create and manage campaigns across Facebook and Instagram, including objectives, audiences, budgets, placements, and measurement. business.

So this article is not about forcing every business to post daily on Facebook. It is about explaining why Facebook should not be ignored when your business wants to grow with Meta advertising.

Why people see Facebook as outdated

The perception is understandable. Younger audiences often spend more time on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, and newer community platforms. For many businesses, Facebook’s regular feed engagement is lower than it was years ago. Organic reach on pages can also be limited unless a post is highly engaging or supported by paid promotion.

Instagram, on the other hand, feels more active. It gives brands a quicker way to show products, behind-the-scenes work, client results, short videos, testimonials, and visual storytelling. Reels can create reach. Stories can create daily touchpoints. Direct messages can create leads.

Because of this, founders often make one mistake: they compare Facebook and Instagram only as content platforms.

That is not the complete picture.

Instagram may be the platform where people discover your visual content, but Facebook and Meta’s backend infrastructure still matter when you want to run campaigns professionally.

Instagram is not a complete campaign backend.

If you only use Instagram, you can boost posts and promote content directly inside the app. That can be useful for quick visibility. But boosting a post is not the same as running a complete campaign.

A serious campaign requires more control. You may need to define:

  • Your actual business goal.

  • The campaign objective.

  • The target location.

  • Audience interests and behaviour.

  • Age range.

  • Budget allocation.

  • Campaign duration.

  • Creative testing.

  • Placement selection.

  • Lead forms.

  • Website conversion tracking.

  • Retargeting audiences.

  • Performance reporting.

Meta Ads Manager is built to manage these elements across Meta platforms. Meta says advertisers can use Ads Manager to choose an objective, target audiences, set budgets and schedules, choose placements, publish ads, and measure results using metrics such as impressions, engagement, and purchases.

Instagram alone does not give every business the same level of structured control through its normal app interface. For a business that wants leads, sales, website visits, appointment bookings, or conversions, the backend setup becomes important.

Why connecting Facebook and Instagram matters

A Facebook Page should be connected to a professional Instagram account, even if Instagram remains your main content channel. This makes your business setup more complete inside Meta’s ecosystem.

Meta states that advertisers need access to a Facebook Page, a professional Instagram account, and an ad account to manage ads through Meta Ads Manager. Meta also notes that connecting the professional Instagram account to a Facebook Page allows people with relevant Page access to advertise using the Instagram account.

This connection can help you:

  • Run campaigns more professionally.

  • Give access to your marketing team or agency.

  • Use Meta Ads Manager properly.

  • Create lead-generation campaigns.

  • Track website activity.

  • Use audience targeting.

  • Run retargeting campaigns.

  • Test multiple ads and audiences.

  • Review performance in one place.

  • Build a stronger business identity across Meta platforms.

Even when you want ads to appear only on Instagram, the campaign can be configured within Ads Manager by selecting Instagram as the placement. Meta documents that advertisers can choose Instagram-only placements or allow ads to run across Meta’s available placements for broader delivery.

In short: you do not need to become a heavy Facebook content creator. But your Facebook Page should not be abandoned if you are serious about Meta marketing.

Facebook still has a different audience

Another reason not to dismiss Facebook is audience diversity. Instagram is excellent for visually driven brands, younger audiences, creators, fashion, food, beauty, lifestyle, and fast-moving content. Facebook still has value for community discussions, local businesses, service providers, older demographics, parent communities, professional groups, events, and interest-based communities.

For example, a restaurant may use Instagram Reels to show food and atmosphere. But Facebook can support local community visibility, event promotion, customer questions, Messenger communication, reviews, and location-based campaigns.

A B2B software company may use Instagram for brand awareness and culture. But Facebook can still support retargeting, lead campaigns, community engagement, and advertising through Meta’s wider delivery system.

The right question is not: “Which platform is modern?”

The right question is: “Where is my customer, and what result do I want?”

Organic content and paid campaigns are different

This is where businesses need more clarity.

Organic content is what you post naturally on your Page or profile. Its job is to build trust, show personality, educate your audience, and remain visible over time.

Paid campaigns are different. Their job is to create a measurable business result. That could be:

  • More website visits.

  • Product sales.

  • Leads.

  • WhatsApp messages.

  • App installs.

  • Video views.

  • Brand awareness.

  • Event registrations.

  • Newsletter sign-ups.

Instagram can be the creative front-end of your campaign. Your Reels, carousels, creator-style videos, testimonials, and product visuals may perform best there. But Meta’s campaign infrastructure is where the targeting, optimization, tracking, and reporting happen.

That is why businesses should stop treating Facebook and Instagram as competitors. They are connected parts of the same advertising system.

A practical example

Imagine a business offering custom website development.

The company posts before-and-after website designs on Instagram. The Reels get views, comments, and shares. That is good for awareness.

But now the business wants to generate qualified leads from founders who need a website.

At this stage, simply posting on Instagram is not enough. The business may need a campaign with:

  • A lead-generation or website-conversion objective.

  • Location targeting for the cities or countries it serves.

  • A custom audience based on website visitors.

  • Retargeting for people who watched the video.

  • A clear offer, such as a free website audit.

  • A lead form or landing page.

  • Follow-up through email, WhatsApp, or a CRM.

That is a campaign system. It requires proper Meta business setup, not only an Instagram account.

Don’t call it outdated—call it strategic

Facebook may not be the most exciting social platform for every audience, but it remains strategically important. It supports the wider Meta advertising environment, connects business assets, enables campaign management, and can still reach useful customer segments.

Businesses should not focus only on what looks popular. They should focus on what helps them build a reliable marketing system.

Instagram is important. It is one of the best channels for brand storytelling, visual engagement, and short-form discovery. But Facebook is still part of the foundation when you want to run campaigns with proper structure.
